‘Symbol Drama’ is London-based, Estonian artist Icahera’s Slagwerk debut.
Three tightly coiled portals to control and release within. It begins with the low-lidded smokestream on ‘Dusk’, bringing with it all the tension and temptation of a nocturnal ride through the glimmer and grime of a sinister, teeming metropolis. The hyper-disciplined body-lock of ‘Re-amp’ brings motion — crosshairs calibrated, levitating, a state of flow beyond conscious thought. It’s primal and physical, subtly smeared textures over Villaloban drumwork that moves and swings and propels forward with intent beyond the banality of conscious thought.
Per the artist, this is “music for an imagined club space”. Closer ‘Nylon’ brings the space to full being: darkness and concrete, scuffed surfaces and sweat, a place where shadows thrive and bodies surge with synthetic inputs and newfound sensations. Strains of dub and progressive house and techno run through this music like chemicals through blood — ‘Symbol Drama is body music, it’s music that’s serious about pleasure.
